Long Shadows
A Dutch “Fietspad”
“Jog on, jog on, the footpath way, And merrily bent the stile-a;” wrote Shakespeare, however, the long and foreboding shadows barred our travelling further.

Living at the Water’s Edge
When I spotted this magnificent houseboat on the Amsterdam waterfront, I immediately thought of my octogenarian friends, Van and Geri (of “Geri Was a WASP“), and the many years they passed their summer days in a less magnificent version of a float house on Lake Coeur d’Alene, in Idaho.

Dutch Windmills
A Landscape, Kinderdijk, The Netherlands
Sometimes a landscape is God’s artwork and sometimes, as here, the hand of man creates upon God’s drawing board. The word “landscape”, recorded for the first time in 1598, seems to have been invented by 16th century Dutch artists during the period when they were becoming masters of the landscape genre. The Dutch word “landschap” had meant simply a region, or tract of land, however when the word entered into the English language it acquired an artistic sense, meaning a painting of scenery on land. Originally, the English word “landscape” was used only to describe landscapes in paintings, not real life vistas of natural scenery as is used today.

The Miller’s Office
As I was touring inside of one of the beautiful windmills at Kinderfijk, I wandered into the miller’s quarters. They were quite charming, as seen by this still life of the miller’s office. April 2006, Kinderdijk, The Netherlands.

The Vagabond
“Give to me the life I love,
Let the lave go by me,
Give the jolly heaven above
And the byway nigh me.
Bed in the bush with stars to see,
Bread I dip in the river –
There’s the life for a man like me,
There’s the life for ever.”
~Robert Lewis Stevenson’s “The Vagabond” from “Songs of Travel and Other Verses”, published in 1896.
