Kinderdijk Landscape

A Landscape, Kinderdijk, The Netherlands

Sometimes a landscape is God’s artwork and sometimes, as here, the hand of man creates upon God’s drawing board. The word “landscape”, recorded for the first time in 1598, seems to have been invented by 16th century Dutch artists during the period when they were becoming masters of the landscape genre. The Dutch word “landschap” had meant simply a region, or tract of land, however when the word entered into the English language it acquired an artistic sense, meaning a painting of scenery on land. Originally, the English word “landscape” was used only to describe landscapes in paintings, not real life vistas of natural scenery as is used today.

The Vagabond

“Give to me the life I love,
Let the lave go by me,
Give the jolly heaven above
And the byway nigh me.
Bed in the bush with stars to see,
Bread I dip in the river –
There’s the life for a man like me,
There’s the life for ever.”

~Robert Lewis Stevenson’s “The Vagabond” from “Songs of Travel and Other Verses”, published in 1896.
